Railroad Tie Retaining Wall Repair

When a tie wall starts leaning, bowing, or rotting, we pull the bad ties and pin new ones in place with 1/2-inch rebar driven through pre-drilled holes. We also set deadman anchors back into the slope and dig out clogged drainage behind the wall, laying perforated drain pipe and gravel backfill so water stops pushing against the ties.

Railroad Tie Retaining Wall Replacement

If a wall is too rotted or tipped to save, we tear it out and rebuild it in the same footprint with new pressure-treated ties or timbers, staggering the joints and spiking each course together with 60d galvanized spikes. If poor drainage caused the old wall to fail, we line the area behind the new wall with landscape fabric and crushed stone before backfilling.

Railroad Tie Retaining Wall Installation

We build new tie walls on a compacted gravel base. We set the first course below grade, check it with a 4-foot level, and step each course above it slightly back into the slope.

Railroad Tie Retaining Wall Removal

We pull old ties with a skid steer or pry bar, cut through the rebar pins with a reciprocating saw, and haul the ties away for proper disposal.

How Much Does Railroad Tie Retaining Wall Repair Cost?

Railroad tie retaining wall repair usually costs between $465 and $2,850 for a typical residential wall. The final price comes down to how many rotted ties need replacing, whether deadman anchors have to be reset into the slope, and how much clogged drainage must be dug out from behind the wall.
